Millions of Europeans followed the election last night and celebrated early this morning as the outcome of the Presidential election became clear. We congratulate Barack Obama for his historic victory and welcome the Democrats back to the Presidency. Obama has inspired America and the whole world. Now we must start working together on the challenges that face us.

A major survey of transatlantic attitudes has found that Europeans overwhelmingly prefer Barack Obama to become the next President of the United States of America. According to the Transatlantic Trends 2008 survey almost seven in ten Europeans (69%) want Obama to win the Presidential election on 4th of November, while only 26% favor John McCain.
